SCIFEST DESERVES OUR SUPPORT

Here at Paycare we are excited about our sponsorship of SciFest- now in its third year - which celebrates the magic of science and engineering. I want to use this column to give a plug for the event hosted by the University of Wolverhampton. The science festival starts a five day run on 1st July which is open to schools and concludes with a spectacular showdown, which is open to the general public on Saturday 5th July, 10am to 4pm.

How fitting that such an event should take place in the Black Country, where science, engineering and invention are such an important part of our history and heritage.  I think too that we should all do as much as we can to encourage young people to explore this fascinating subject and get involved.

It seems that we are not the only ones supporting the event. Former television presenter, Johnny Ball, famous for his brainpower and number crunching ability and Titan the giant robot, who was in the 2010 Big Brother series, will be on hand on Saturday to battle with each other and meet and greet visitors. The BBC’s One Show resident scientist Dr Marty Jopson will also appear at the family fun day along with Maggie Philbin.

Scifest features a series of school visits with students of all ages hildren from local schools from years 5 and 6, GCSE and A-level classes all visiting the festival.

Other events to look forward to are; The Classroon Medics, Think Tank Planetarium, Animal Man, The Marquee of Marvels and Mayhem, Lego Education, Computer Games Workshop, Who Wants to be a Science Millionaire?, Crime Scene Forensics, Robot Workshop and hands-on science and engineering experiments and activities. Whatever your age, you’ll find completely FREE workshops, experiments and games designed to bring STEM subjects to life.

Dr Derek Walton, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University said: “Scifest will be a fantastic week and we hope as many people as possible can come and join us.”

Other sponsors include; Telford Manufacturing Partnership and The Black Country Skills Factory.
